Snorkeling in Tagulandang. North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Tagulandang has a good offer of places for snorkeling. Most sites in Tagulandang Island can be accessed from the beach, for the rest you will have to rent a boat. Pasighe and Ruang Islands also have good snorkeling spots. To go to these islands you have to rent a boat.

When snorkeling in Tagulandang you must take a few precautions:

  1. Use a good UPF sun protection cream.
  2. Use a snorkeling T-shirt (recommended with UPF).
  3. Use fins or boots. Be careful with the sea urchins and stone fish!
  4. Do not step on the corals.
  5. Do not touch the corals and /or fish.
  6. Be careful with the currents (and check the tides beforehand).

Tagulandang Island:

  • Lesah Corals. In front of the town of Lesah there is a long and wide coral reef. At the end of it, there is a wall. Plenty of little reef fish and corals. On high tide you may be able to swim to the wall, but it is quite far. It is recommended to rent a boat for half a day (75.000 Rp).
  • Batu Ampat. In front of the fish market in Bahoi there is a nice coral reef. Many anemone fish, trumpet fish, fusiliers, etc. You can swim from the beach, but be careful with the sea urchins. It is possible to access the site by boat too (75.000 Rp).
  • Bahoi Harbor. Although this is a big harbor, its waters are quite clean. Under the jetty you will find many soft corals, schooling fish and some predators. Next to the harbor there’s a wreck from a oil ship that sunk ten years ago. The access to the site is on foot. (check our video)
  • Bahoi Beach. South of Bahoi there is a nice beach. In front of it, there is a coral reef with many little fish and good corals. The waters are clean. Be careful with the currents. Access to the site: swimming; Access to the beach: on foot and/or Motorbike.
  • Humbia Beach. Humbia is a fisherman town East from Bahoi. Its wide beach is a good place for swimming and snorkeling. Access to the site: swimming; Access to the town: by boat and/or Motorbike.
  • Bira Beach: Bira is the biggest white sand beach in Tagulandang. In this beach you will find a few corals, with little fish around, and a lot of sand. Access to the site: swimming; Access to the town: by boat and/or Motorbike.
  • Bulangan Beach: in front of this beach you will find a long and wide coral reef with hard corals. During low tide swimming is not recommended. During the high tide, you can enjoy the many little fish living here. Access to the site: swimming and/or by boat; Access to the town: by boat and/or Motorbike.

Ruang Island:

  • Lainpatehi: this is the main town in the island of Ruang. In front of it there is a beach with a coral reef, around 200 meters from the sand. Access to the site: swimming and/or by boat; Access to the island: by boat. Cost of  renting a  boat 150.000 Rp per day.
  • Lihonga Beach. In front of this black sand beach and next to it there are a few corals with many little fish. Access to the site: swimming and/or by boat; Access to the island: by boat. Cost of  renting a  boat 150.000 Rp per day.
  • Tanjung Angus. In front of this pebble beach, there are a few corals. Access to the site: swimming and/or by boat; Access to the island: by boat. Cost of  renting a  boat 150.000 Rp per day.

Pasighe Island:

  • Pasighe Reef Tip: Around the uninhabited island of Pasighe there is a wide and long Coral Reef. It spreads for more than one kilometer North of Pasighe. Around the island big currents are common, extreme precautions. Nice hard and soft corals, and some big fish. Access by boat. Cost of  renting a  boat 150.000 Rp per day.
  • Pasighe Arus: The East Coast of Pasighe is probably the safest. The wall is around 400 meters from the island. Many schooling fish, snappers, groupers, and a few sharks. Access by boat. Cost of  renting a  boat 150.000 Rp per day.
